A Walk Around the Park

This morning I took a pre-dawn walk around Avon Park.  The first thing that strikes me about the ministry here is the opportunity the camp has seized to be a ministry to senior citizens.

The camp has a bevy of mobile homes, RV spaces, ranchers and apartment options for snow birds fleeing south.  Even though it is early October I can remember two years this week ago freezing in central Ohio as the chill had already descended, last year we fared better in Cape May with cool nights and warm days.  Yesterday I stepped off the plane here and it was in the mid-80’s.  I can see why people would migrate to a place like Avon Park for the winter months.  The ministry down here has done a good job providing options for those who want to make the trip.

Behind the camp facility is Oaks Retirement Villiage.  Until very recently it was a ministry of World Gospel Mission and many of the residents there support the camp meeting here.  As I walked the grounds of the Oaks this morning I could see where this would also be a very enticing option for retirees.  With the economic crunch the new owners it is rumored will be offering short and long term rental options along with purchase opportunities.  Avon Park Camp also offers rental options for a series of apartments they own.  I hope to tour them when we look under the hood in tomorrow morning’s session with the Avon Park leadership.

The buildings here are block, low maintenance structures and are well kept.  There is quite a crew out here this morning swapping stories and taking their morning walks.  It seems a vital place even during their off season.

Avon Park is unique in its winter program and temperate climate but it worth noting they are doing a lot of things to minister to the population of the area and taking advantage of their surroundings.

The Day Before…

My son Bob and I flew into Orlando this morning and have been picking up a few last minute things for the conference down here.  Then we stopped in at a restaurant to watch our Philadelphia Phillies play in the first round of the baseball playoffs.  We will be at Avon Park, Lord willing, this evening.  Eldred and LuAnn have the place ready for us to descend on the camp.  I know a few will be joining us this evening.

For those of you still at home, the weather today down here was 90 degrees and sunny.  The next two days look to be the same.

Here is the schedule of events.  See you soon.

Camp Meeting Leaders Website Relaunch

Welcome to the rebirth of the Camp Meeting Leader website.  We have moved to a Wordpress format to better serve the Camp Meeting movement.

Several years ago the Christian Holiness Partnership, a descendant of the Camp Meeting Holiness Association ceased operation.  With it the Campmeeting Challenge, conferences and other vehicles linking Holiness Camp Meetings was lost.  Many of the leaders of our camps decided that something needed to be done to fill this void.

Two years ago at the urging of Rev. Gary Campbell we met at lovely Camp Sychar near Mount Vernon, Ohio. This unique group met for mutual encouragement, fellowship and investigation of the the various ways God is using Camp Meetings to minister in our present age.  The time was beneficial and encouraging and plans were quickly formed for a second Summit.

Last year we enjoyed an informative, challenging and refreshing conference at the Jersey Shore, hosted by Rev. Jack Taylor and Erma Camp Meeting. This year’s conference will be held at Avon Park Camp Meeting, in the heart of sunny Florida on October 2-4.  Over thirty leaders have confirmed their participation in this year’s Summit.

Dr. Eldred Kelley, Avon Park President, will be our host. Please contact him with any questions about travel and lodging. Email Eldred.

Jim Schroeder will once again moderate the conference. Email Jim with any issues regarding program or planning.
